What Causes Black Specks on Molded Parts — and How Do You Eliminate Them?
Black specks on molded parts are almost always degraded resin — polymer that was overheated, charred, or contaminated somewhere between the hopper and the nozzle. The source is rarely the resin itself; it is the dead zones in the barrel, the hot-runner tips, or the screw flights where stagnant material accumulates, degrades over hundreds of shots, and then breaks loose as a black particle that lands on the part surface.
Gate vestige — The visible mark left on the part surface where the gate was trimmed. Edge gate: 0.5–2.0mm vestige. Pin-point gate: 0.2–0.5mm. Valve gate: 0.05–0.1mm (flush). Vestige size affects cosmetic appearance and may require secondary trimming. See also related guide.
