Single Cavity vs Multi-Cavity Mold: How Do You Calculate the Breakeven Volume?
The choice between a single-cavity and a multi-cavity mold is a volume-driven economic decision — not a technical preference. A multi-cavity mold produces more parts per cycle but costs 40–80 % more to build and introduces cavity-to-cavity variation that must be managed. The breakeven volume is the annual production quantity at which the per-part cost savings from multi-cavity output equals the higher tooling cost amortized over the program life.
Process parameter — A controllable variable in the injection molding process: melt temperature, injection speed, holding pressure, cooling time, mold temperature. Each parameter affects part quality — deviations cause defects. Parameters are set during T1 and locked for production. See also related guide.
