Mold Cooling Channel Design — How Does Channel Layout Affect Cycle Time and Part Quality?
Mold cooling channels remove 70–80% of the heat from the molded part — the channel layout, diameter, distance from the cavity surface and flow rate determine the cooling time, part warpage and dimensional consistency. A well-designed cooling system reduces cycle time by 20–40% compared to a basic drill-and-tap layout, while a poorly designed system causes differential cooling, warpage and dimensional variation that no amount of process tuning can fix.
Flash — Thin excess material that escapes between the mold parting line or around ejector pins. Cause: insufficient clamp force, worn parting line, excessive injection pressure, or contaminated mold surface. Flash thickness: 0.02–0.1mm. Requires secondary trimming to remove. See also related guide.
