When Does a Hot-Runner System Pay for Itself — and What Does It Add to the Quotation?
A hot-runner system eliminates the cold runner (the sprue, runners, and cold slug) from every shot — saving material, removing the runner-trimming step, and reducing cycle time by eliminating runner cooling. The cost is a 15–40 % increase in the mold quotation (depending on the number of drops and the manifold complexity). The payback calculation is straightforward: compare the material savings, cycle-time savings, and labor savings per shot against the hot-runner cost uplift, divided by the total production volume.
Runner system — The channel network that delivers melt from the machine nozzle to each cavity. Cold runner: solidifies between shots, produces runner waste. Hot runner: stays molten, eliminates runner waste but adds $15k–$40k to mold cost. See also related guide.
