When Does a Second Identical Mold Beat Adding Cavities?
A second identical mold buys capacity in parallel — two presses run the same tool design, so downtime on one never stops the other — while adding cavities buys capacity inside one tool, at the cost of a bigger press, rebalanced filling, and a single point of failure. The second tool wins when uptime and risk matter most; more cavities win when the part economics demand the lowest cost per piece and volume growth is certain.
Shrinkage — The dimensional reduction from mold cavity to cooled part. Amorphous resins: 0.4–0.7% (uniform). Semi-crystalline: 1.0–2.5% (directional). Mold makers apply shrinkage factor when machining cavity. Actual shrinkage varies with wall thickness, gate location and packing pressure. See also related guide.
