Hot Runner Maintenance Cost — What Should Be Budgeted for Heater Bands, Nozzle Tips and Manifold Service?
Hot runner maintenance costs $1,500–5,000 per year per mold in consumable components (heater bands, nozzle tips, seals) — plus $2,000–8,000 every 300,000–500,000 shots for manifold disassembly, cleaning and reassembly. The hot runner eliminates the cold runner waste, but it adds maintenance cost that must be budgeted into the per-part rate.
When the maintenance is planned and documented, the cost is predictable; when it is reactive, a failed heater band or a degraded nozzle tip stops production and costs 10× more in downtime than the component itself.
Parting line — The line where the two mold halves (A-side and B-side) meet. Parting line location affects: gate placement, ejector pin marks, witness lines, and cosmetic appearance. A well-designed parting line minimizes visible witness marks. See also related guide.
