What Causes Stress Whitening at Snap Fits — and How Do You Design It Out?
Stress whitening is micro-crazing — tiny voids and stretched fibrils forming in the resin where local strain exceeds the material’s limit — and snap fits trigger it because they concentrate assembly strain at the hook root, where sharp geometry, residual mold-in stress and an over-traveling insertion meet. The white mark is a visible symptom of a real strength event: the part usually still works, but the whitened zone is damaged material, and the crack that ends the part’s life almost always starts there.
Flash — Thin excess material that escapes between the mold parting line or around ejector pins. Cause: insufficient clamp force, worn parting line, excessive injection pressure, or contaminated mold surface. Flash thickness: 0.02–0.1mm. Requires secondary trimming to remove. See also related guide.
