Why Should Cavity Inserts Be Interchangeable — and How Do You Plan Spare Cavities?
Cavity inserts are individually machined steel blocks that form the cavity (or core) geometry for one part in a multi-cavity mold — they are designed to be removable and replaceable without replacing the entire mold base. When a single cavity insert is damaged (worn, cracked, corroded, or nicked), the insert is pulled from the mold base and a spare is installed in its position.
If the inserts are truly interchangeable — machined to the same nominal dimensions with the same tolerances — the spare drops in and production resumes without a fitting operation. Interchangeable inserts reduce downtime from weeks (for a full mold repair) to hours (for an insert swap).
Flash — Thin excess material that escapes between the mold parting line or around ejector pins. Cause: insufficient clamp force, worn parting line, excessive injection pressure, or contaminated mold surface. Flash thickness: 0.02–0.1mm. Requires secondary trimming to remove. See also related guide.
