Injection Molding vs Sheet Metal: When Does Plastic Beat Stamped Steel?
Injection molding beats stamped steel when your part consolidates multiple functions into complex geometry, needs corrosion immunity or electrical insulation, lives in volumes that amortize the tool — while sheet metal wins on flat or simply formed parts, very large enclosures, extreme heat, and programs that need design changes without a new tool. The honest comparison is part-by-part: count the fasteners, brackets and secondary operations each approach needs, then price the total.
Shrinkage — The dimensional reduction from mold cavity to cooled part. Amorphous resins: 0.4–0.7% (uniform). Semi-crystalline: 1.0–2.5% (directional). Mold makers apply shrinkage factor when machining cavity. Actual shrinkage varies with wall thickness, gate location and packing pressure. See also related guide.
