What Is a Pilot Cavity Plan — and How Does Cut-Now-Add-Later Work?
A pilot cavity plan starts production in a mold frame sized for the full-volume program — with fewer cavities cut now, and the remaining cavity positions pre-engineered so they can be machined in later without replacing the mold — and cut-now-add-later is the discipline that makes the expansion a scheduled machining job instead of a new-tool purchase. The frame, runner layout, water, ejector grid and mounting are all built for eight cavities on day one, even when only two are cut, because the expensive part of the mold is the system around the cavities.
Process parameter — A controllable variable in the injection molding process: melt temperature, injection speed, holding pressure, cooling time, mold temperature. Each parameter affects part quality — deviations cause defects. Parameters are set during T1 and locked for production. See also related guide.
