How Does Mold Steel Grade Affect the Quotation — and When Does the Upgrade Pay Back?
The mold steel grade affects the quotation in two ways: the material cost of the cavity block itself, and the machining cost driven by the steel’s hardness. A switch from P20 (30 HRC) to H13 hardened (50 HRC) increases the cavity block cost by 10–15 % and the machining time by 20–40 % — but it extends the cavity life from 200,000 to 1,000,000 shots in glass-filled resins, which changes the cost-per-part calculation entirely.
Flash — Thin excess material that escapes between the mold parting line or around ejector pins. Cause: insufficient clamp force, worn parting line, excessive injection pressure, or contaminated mold surface. Flash thickness: 0.02–0.1mm. Requires secondary trimming to remove. See also related guide.
