How Do You Set the Barrel Temperature Profile — and What Happens When It Is Wrong?
The barrel temperature profile is the sequence of heating-zone setpoints from the feed zone (rear) to the nozzle (front) — it controls how the resin melts, how uniformly it plasticizes, and how it behaves when injected into the mold. A correct profile produces a homogeneous melt at a consistent viscosity. An incorrect profile causes incomplete melting (unmelted pellets in the melt stream), thermal degradation (overheated resin breaking down), or inconsistent shot-to-shot weight — each of which produces a different class of molding defect.
Runner system — The channel network that delivers melt from the machine nozzle to each cavity. Cold runner: solidifies between shots, produces runner waste. Hot runner: stays molten, eliminates runner waste but adds $15k–$40k to mold cost. See also related guide.
