What Does It Cost to Refurbish a Mold vs Build a New One?
Refurbishing a mold typically costs a modest fraction of a new build and takes weeks instead of months — but it only buys back life when the steel underneath is sound and the design is still what the market wants; when either assumption fails, the repair invoice is a down payment on a new tool anyway. The honest comparison prices three things side by side: what the refurbishment scope actually covers, how many shots the work buys, and what the program loses while the tool is out.
Cavity — The hollow space inside the mold that forms the part shape. Multi-cavity molds produce multiple parts per shot. Cavity count determines production output but also mold cost and complexity. Each cavity must be balanced for uniform fill. See also related guide.
