What Should a Mold Acceptance Checklist Include — and Where Do Buyers Skip Critical Steps?
A mold acceptance checklist covers three domains before the tool leaves the mold maker’s floor: dimensional accuracy of the mold itself, part quality from the trial shots, and documentation completeness — and the most common buyer mistake is approving on part dimensions alone while skipping mold inspection and documentation review. The mold is a capital asset with a design life of 500,000+ shots; accepting it without verifying the steel, the cooling and the spare parts list means discovering problems during production, when every hour of downtime costs more than the mold correction.
Shrinkage — The dimensional reduction from mold cavity to cooled part. Amorphous resins: 0.4–0.7% (uniform). Semi-crystalline: 1.0–2.5% (directional). Mold makers apply shrinkage factor when machining cavity. Actual shrinkage varies with wall thickness, gate location and packing pressure. See also related guide.
