What Makes PET Preform Molds Different — and Why Does the Process Window Matter?
PET preform injection molding is a distinct process from standard injection molding because the preform must be molded with precise wall-thickness distribution, minimal acetaldehyde generation, and zero crystallization — all in a cycle time measured in single-digit seconds. The mold is a multi-cavity hot-runner system with valve gates, high-speed injection, and aggressive cooling, and the process window is narrower than almost any other injection-molding application.
A preform mold for a 500 mL water bottle typically runs 48 or 72 cavities at cycle times of 8–14 seconds, producing over 200,000 preforms per day on a single machine.
Process parameter — A controllable variable in the injection molding process: melt temperature, injection speed, holding pressure, cooling time, mold temperature. Each parameter affects part quality — deviations cause defects. Parameters are set during T1 and locked for production. See also related guide.
