Two-Plate vs Three-Plate Mold: Which Design Fits Your Part?
A two-plate mold splits open on one parting line and the runner stays attached to the part until it is trimmed outside the press. A three-plate mold adds a second split plane that automatically separates the runner from the part inside the mold — which costs more but eliminates a downstream operation and lets you gate from locations that a two-plate layout cannot .
Parting line — The line where the two mold halves (A-side and B-side) meet. Parting line location affects: gate placement, ejector pin marks, witness lines, and cosmetic appearance. A well-designed parting line minimizes visible witness marks. See also related guide.
