How Do You Protect Intellectual Property When Sourcing a Mold from China?
Intellectual-property protection when sourcing injection molds from China is a layered strategy — no single document or mechanism provides complete protection. The layers are: NNN (non-disclosure, non-use, non-circumvention) agreement enforceable in Chinese courts, controlled information release (3D data only after deposit and NDA execution), design-for-manufacturing details kept separate from the full part design, and mold-ownership clauses that ensure the physical tool ships to you after payment. Each layer addresses a different risk vector.
Warpage — Part deformation after ejection caused by uneven shrinkage. Amorphous resins warp less (0.4–0.7% shrinkage). Semi-crystalline resins warp more (1.0–2.5% shrinkage). Fix: uniform wall thickness, balanced cooling, optimized gate location, adequate packing pressure. See also related guide.
