What Is a Valve-Gated Hot Runner — and When Do You Need One?
A valve-gated hot runner opens and closes each gate with a mechanically driven pin, leaving a small flat witness mark instead of the vestige an open gate leaves — and you choose it when gate appearance, weld line control, or fill sequencing is worth the added cost and maintenance. It is not a better hot runner in general; it is a different tool that buys three specific capabilities.
Runner system — The channel network that delivers melt from the machine nozzle to each cavity. Cold runner: solidifies between shots, produces runner waste. Hot runner: stays molten, eliminates runner waste but adds $15k–$40k to mold cost. See also related guide.
