How Do You Prevent Rust and Corrosion on Injection Molds During Storage and Shipping?
Mold rust is prevented by three actions: applying a rust inhibitor rated for the storage duration, wrapping the mold in vapor corrosion inhibitor (VCI) film or paper, and controlling the storage environment humidity below 50% relative humidity — together, these three measures prevent corrosion on P20, H13, S136 and all common mold steels for storage periods from weeks to years. The cost of rust prevention is a fraction of the cost of rust remediation: polishing a corroted cavity surface costs $200–$1,500 per surface, while replacing a corroted insert costs the full machining cost of the component.
Gate vestige — The visible mark left on the part surface where the gate was trimmed. Edge gate: 0.5–2.0mm vestige. Pin-point gate: 0.2–0.5mm. Valve gate: 0.05–0.1mm (flush). Vestige size affects cosmetic appearance and may require secondary trimming. See also related guide.
