What Does PPAP Submission Cost — and Who Pays for It?
PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) is the automotive industry’s evidence package that a supplier can produce parts to specification at rate — and the cost of assembling that package falls on whoever owns the submission obligation, which is almost always the molder, not the mold maker. The mold maker’s cost is the dimensional report, material records and trial evidence the PPAP requires; the molder’s cost is the process validation, capability studies and the submission itself.
Cycle time — The total time for one injection molding cycle: injection + packing + cooling + mold open/close + ejection. Typical range: 15–60 seconds. Cycle time determines production rate and cost per part — reducing cycle by 5 seconds saves 10–15% annual production cost. See also related guide.
