What Is a Cosmetic Boundary Sample — and Why Sign One Before Production?
A cosmetic boundary sample is a signed physical part — or set of parts — that defines the worst appearance still accepted for shipment: the maximum visible weld line, the largest permitted sink, the exact gate vestige, under specified lighting. It is signed before production because appearance disputes are otherwise unresolvable after they start. Words like “good cosmetic finish” contain no number; the boundary sample replaces the adjectives with an object both sides can hold under the same light.
Shrinkage — The dimensional reduction from mold cavity to cooled part. Amorphous resins: 0.4–0.7% (uniform). Semi-crystalline: 1.0–2.5% (directional). Mold makers apply shrinkage factor when machining cavity. Actual shrinkage varies with wall thickness, gate location and packing pressure. See also related guide.
