What Is In-Mold Assembly — and Which Joints Can Be Molded Pre-Engaged?
In-mold assembly means two or more parts come out of the tool already joined — either a joint molded into a single part that would otherwise be separate pieces, or multiple components molded together so the assembly step disappears from your production line. Living hinges, snap hooks molded in their engaged state, captured screws and overmolded terminals all belong here, and each works when the joint’s engagement is compatible with the mold’s opening directions — the tool decides which joints are possible, not the catalog.
Warpage — Part deformation after ejection caused by uneven shrinkage. Amorphous resins warp less (0.4–0.7% shrinkage). Semi-crystalline resins warp more (1.0–2.5% shrinkage). Fix: uniform wall thickness, balanced cooling, optimized gate location, adequate packing pressure. See also related guide.
