What Warps a Flat Part — and How Do You Predict It Before T1?
Flat parts warp because they shrink by different amounts in different places and different directions — differential shrinkage from flow orientation, uneven cooling, non-uniform packing, and residual stress from filling — and modern moldflow simulation predicts this before steel is cut, provided the analysis is fed the honest inputs and read with judgment. The prediction is not a luxury: on a flat part, flatness is usually the specification, and the fix for warpage discovered at T1 is a tool correction plus a trial, while the same fix discovered at DFM costs a design note.
